She came to it early, in the dirt. Asawa grew up on a truck farm in California, the daughter of Japanese immigrants who worked the fields until the light gave out, and her first sense of time was the ground’s, not the clock’s. Planting running into growth, growth into harvest, harvest into the slow rot that fed the next planting, nothing ever announcing its own ending. She made an entire body of work that behaves the way the farm behaved: surfaces turning back into themselves, forms carrying other forms inside them.

Most of us draw lines instead, like between work and rest, between the one hour we set aside for beauty and the twenty-three we don’t—and we sort our lives into categories that don’t quite touch, and we call that being organized. We never count the cost of the sorting: the day disappearing into the seams, the closing of one thing, the opening of the next. A life spent managing borders is a life lived mostly at borders.

Asawa’s proposal—made in wire and sustained over decades—was that the borders aren’t really there.

There is a photograph of her: she sits on the floor of her living room, wire pooling in her lap, while a few of her children play around her. She isn’t stopping to be a mother, and she hasn’t stepped away from her work; she’s doing both at once, because in her practice there was no seam to cross. Work didn’t wait outside the house. It sat on the floor with everything else.

This is a harder idea than balance, which is still a fence-builder’s word, or multitasking, which is only running faster between the fences. What Asawa understood was deeper than that: the borders are an invention, and much of what we call distraction is the friction of maintaining categories that aren’t true.

Great art doesn’t honor the frame we put around it. It stays with us on the drive home; it changes what you notice at dinner; it shows up the next morning, uninvited, in a conversation about something else. Which is part of the frame’s power: its not a boundary, only a doorway, and doorways open both directions.

Which is why the question worth carrying out of a gallery is not what did I see but what has become continuous with me: what has crossed over, what now belongs to the same surface as the rest of the day.

Asawa said she worked in wire because with it she could define the air without stealing it from anyone—a line, she said, can enclose space while letting the air remain air. It is hard to hear that only as a note on sculpture. It’s a way of moving through the world. Taking up space without pushing anything else out of it, making room for what is already there.

That is what a certain kind of attention does. It doesn’t add or perform. It stops drawing lines that were never there, and lets the world become continuous with itself again.

The psychologist Erich Fromm had a name for what happens in those four seconds. He thought that we live in two modes—the having mode and the being mode. In the having mode, we meet our needs by attaining and controlling things because some needs work that way. You need to have water, a roof. But other needs can’t be met by possession. You can’t have maturity; you become mature. You can’t have honesty; you become honest. English keeps the distinction for us: we say people have sex, but that they are in love.

Fromm believed that trouble begins when we pursue a need of the second kind with the tools of the first. Wanting to become secure, we accumulate. Wanting to be loved, we collect admirers or followers. The acquisitions pile up, and the need stays exactly where it was. He called this a confusion of modes, and thought it ran through most of modern life.

What we want from art belongs to the second kind. We come to be moved, steadied; to leave from the experience slightly different from the person who walked in. This is the main idea from the book Art as Therapy: art is a tool for supplying something our character lacks. But a tool like that only works if we let it work on us, and nothing that works on us can be owned.

The museum, meanwhile, offers endless ways to own. A photograph. The gift shop. Another exhibition crossed off a list. These aren’t bad things. The trouble is only that each lets us feel like we completed the experience without having had it. We leave with the painting in our pocket, and otherwise unchanged.

Success in the having mode is leaving with something; success in the being mode is leaving different. The difference doubles as a test: in front of any art, there is an honest answer to what would count as success, and the answer tells you which mode you're standing in.

The awkward part is that the being mode produces nothing to show. There’s no image, no proof. From the outside it looks like a person standing still. Which is exactly why the having mode wins so often: it always hands you a receipt, and just being with a painting never does.

Fromm believed the confusion ran through nearly everything, love pursued as possession, rest pursued as purchase. A self assembled like an inventory of what it can show to others. He may have been right about all of it. I think the gallery is simply a good practice room, where the whole confusion becomes visible; four seconds at a time.

For almost all of human history, a voice came with a body and a place. A phone gives you the voice and nothing else, so you circle the kitchen looking for the person in your ear. The poet Kaveh Akbar, a pacer, describes it as the unconscious wandering around after a speaker it can hear but can’t see. Not a finding—an idea he liked. But it names something familiar: a voice with nothing to hold it can leave you adrift, like patting your pockets for something you were sure you had a second ago.

Much of modern speech is disembodied in this way. Think of calls, texts, voice notes; words sent from nowhere and received nowhere. The conversation happens, but it doesn’t happen somewhere. Later, we remember that we talked, but what was said has already begun to dissolve.

Akbar was interviewing the writer Ingrid Rojas Contreras when a small fix turned up by accident. She was walking while they spoke. Partway through, she stopped to report what her body was doing with the conversation—that as she walked and listened, she was also making spatial memory. Without a body to attach the voice to, she had given the exchange another kind of body: a path. Akbar named what that meant. The path would carry the mark of the conversation, and she’d be able to reach that mark again by walking there.

That’s the practice: give a conversation a place on purpose.

You’re not walking for exercise with a call going, or fitting a conversation in between errands. Everyone with headphones walks and talks; the walk gets spent on whatever call arrives. Here you pick the route before the call begins, knowing which conversation it’s for. Then you go back alone.

How to do it

01 - Chose a conversation worth keeping

Not every call needs a place. Choose one that matters: the weekly call with a parent, the friend who moved away, the conversation you keep putting off because you know it will ask something of you.

Give a place to the words you might want back.

02 - Choose a route you can return to

A loop through your neighborhood, a park trail, a familiar stretch of the BeltLine. The route needs enough character to register; a bridge, a cluster of trees, a row of storefronts. But it has to be easy to walk again.

03 - Let the conversation set the pace

Don’t build the walk around an errand or a destination, and don’t rush toward the end of it. Notice where you are when something important gets said: the tree you’re passing, the house on the corner, the slant of the light. Give the moment a patch of ground where it can take root.

04 - Return alone within the week

This is where the practice shows itself. You walk the same route in silence and see what comes back.

A bend in the road hands back a sentence. Halfway down some stairs, you remember a story they told you there the first time. The conversation hasn’t disappeared. Part of it is still out on the path, waiting.

Why it works

You’re borrowing one of memory’s oldest structures. Around 500 BC, in a story Cicero tells, the poet stepped out of a banquet hall a few minutes before the roof came down on everyone inside. The bodies were crushed past recognition. Simonides identified them anyway, by walking the room again in his mind and recalling who had been sitting where.

Roman orators built a technique out of that. To hold an hour of speech without notes, you pictured a building you knew well, put an image for each part of the argument in a particular room, and walked the building as you spoke. The technique is not well-known but its fossils are still in the language. When you say in the first place, and then in the second place, you’re counting off rooms. Topic comes from the Greek topos, a place. So does commonplace.

A conversation tied to a landscape sits differently in the mind. It has edges and coordinates. You can go back to it.

Keep it up for a year and the streets around you stop being neutral. A corner of the park holds a memory. The bench by the pond keeps another. The neighborhood turns into a document you read by walking.

Many of us already have one of these without having planned it. Think of a walk you take often, and ask whether a conversation is still living on it. If one is, maybe there’s someone you could call to place another beside it.

Give a conversation a street to happen on, then walk that street again some ordinary week. On an errand, or on nothing. Part of what was said will still be there, where you left it.

Which means the version you can access is the version you are currently authoring.

This is less of a metaphor and more of a description of what is physically happening in your skull the moment you say I remember. The past is not somewhere you go. It is something you make, over and over, each time you turn toward it. And it changes each time you make it, because you are changing, and the tools you are using to build it are changing with you.

The poet Ocean Vuong has a line about this that has stayed with me. He points out that the Greek root of poet is poiētēs—one who makes. To be a poet is to be a maker. Which means that to remember is to be a poet. Every act of recollection is an act of creation. Every contact with the past is a small, unconscious composition.

This should trouble us more than it does. Most of us live as though our memories were a private vault, sealed off from the person we’ve become. We assume our past is fixed, even when everything else about us isn't. But the past turns out to be the least fixed thing about us. It shifts every time we go looking for it.

Which brings us, strangely, to art.

Because the same thing happens when you return to a painting you’ve seen before. The first time you stood in front of it, you saw one thing. When you come back a year later. After a season of grief, or a change of job, or the slow settling of an idea you couldn’t have named the first time it drifted through your mind. The painting hasn’t changed. The pigments are the same. The composition is the same. But the encounter is not the same, because you’re not the same, and the painting you’re now looking at is being seen by a different person than the one who looked before.

This is why the art that matters to us are the ones we return to. Not the ones we just happen upon but the ones we come back to, and back to, and each time find something we couldn’t have found the time before. The novel you first read in a college is not the same novel you flip through at thirty. The strange movie that meant nothing to you at twenty means something now that you cant quite explain, and will mean something else again at fifty.

The art has been quietly waiting. What has been arriving, in different forms each time, is you.

Which suggests something worth carrying into the museum this month, and into everything else. That the works you have already seen and experienced are not finished with you. That the second look is often more honest than the first. That familiarity, in this one specific sense, is not the end of an encounter. It’s the beginning of a longer conversation, in which you and the work are both being remade.

And that maybe one of the most powerful things a work of art can do is not show us something new, but show us that we have become someone new since we last looked.

It sets in slowly, politely, without announcing itself. It happens to cities you’ve lived in too long, to faces you know too well, to the view from a window you’ve looked through a thousand times. The world doesn’t disappear exactly; it just stops registering. Familiarity is the mind’s way of filing things away as already handled, freeing up attention for whatever feels newer, more unresolved.

It’s an efficient system that keeps us alive. It’s also a kind of loss.

Painters have understood this for centuries. The rest of us tend to grasp it only in reverse. You notice the soft square of light on the floor the day you’re moving out of it. You really look at a person’s face the moment you understand you won’t see it again. It may be that attention is a resource we don’t hand over easily. It has to be pried open.

Art is one of the few things that can do the prying.

It takes the thing we thought we had already seen and places it back in front of us, strange again.

Vermeer spent his life painting the same rooms, the same domestic light falling through the same leaded windows, the same ordinary women doing the same unremarkable things. Pouring milk. Reading a letter. Standing at a window. He made fewer than forty paintings in a lifetime. By the numbers, almost nothing. But what he was doing was training the eye to see what was really in front of him. To let the familiar become strange enough to become beautiful.

It’s a way of looking, and it can be learned. You can train yourself back into attention. Back into the world. Back into the particular.

Because something strange happens when you sit with art long enough. Like Edward Hopper’s lonely diners with people sitting under electric light as if they’ve been awake too long inside their own lives. Or Carrie Mae Weems’s photographs of typical rooms and familiar gestures, people eating, sitting, waiting, carrying the whole weight of their lives in their face. Something in you reorganizes. You walk out of the gallery and the street looks different. More present. More worth the attention you almost didn’t give it.

The philosopher Simone Weil wrote that attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. She meant it as something close to a spiritual discipline. The gift of truly attending to what's in front of you. But I think it applies as well to the way we move through the world. The ride to work. The walk around the neighborhood. The faces we pass without really seeing. To really look at a thing is to let it back into the circle of what you care about. To refuse to let the world go invisible on you.

In the end, that's what good art does. Not just show you something new. But remind you how to look.

Psychologists who study memory have long noticed a strange asymmetry: the stretches of time that race by while you live them are often the ones that loom largest afterward, and the ones that feel ordinary enough to forget can vanish from memory entirely. Routine compresses. Novelty expands. A single afternoon in an unfamiliar city can feel, in retrospect, longer than a month of ordinary Tuesdays.

Which means the question isn’t really how much time we have. It’s what we do with our attention inside it.

Artists have always understood this intuitively. The painter laboring over a single square inch of canvas isn’t being inefficient — they’re doing something else entirely. They’re refusing to let a moment pass without being fully inside it. It’s a way of giving time somewhere to gather. Time expands because the attention is whole.

This is why a walk without headphones can sometimes last longer in memory than three hours online. Not because it contained more events, but because more of us was available to receive it.

Most of us live the opposite way. We move through days quickly and wonder, at the end of them, where they went. We fill evenings with things designed to be consumed rather than remembered, and wake up Tuesday having retained almost nothing of Monday, then reach the weekend faintly startled that a week went by.

There’s nothing wrong with rest, ease, or even forgetting. It’s about the difference between time that passes and time that registers. Between a life measured in hours and a life measured in moments you can actually find when you go looking for them.

THE QUESTION

There’s a better way to go in.

The philosopher Alain de Botton suggest thinking about art the way we think about medicine. Not really in a clinical sense, but in the sense that we go to a pharmacy with a specific ailment in mind. We don’t just browse the shelves hoping something will randomly improve our health. We arrive knowing what we need, and we look for the thing that addresses it.

The same logic applies to art. Before you visit a gallery or open an art book, or scroll online for inspiration, ask yourself one honest question:

What is the dominant weather of my inner life right now?

Are you anxious? Overstimulated? Numb? Grieving something you haven’t named yet? Feeling small, or disconnected, or weirdly restless without knowing why?

Your answer is your prescription.

WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE

A person coming apart at the seams could find relief in standing in front of one of Claude Monet’s paintings at the High; one that captures a perfect, subtle reflection of the landscape in the water below that gives the feeling of having all the time in the world. Someone who has forgotten what tenderness looks like might find it again in ten minutes with The Funeral of Atala, the kind of painting that asks nothing of you except to notice how gently it regards its subject.

The prescription is personal. Nobody can write it for you.

The typical approach to art → chronological, historical, comprehensive; treats the gallery like a library to be catalogued. The apothecary model treats it as a resource to be used. It puts you, and your specific human condition at this specific moment, at the center of the experience.

It gives you permission to ignore the placard, skip the “high-profile” rooms, and spend twenty minutes with one mysterious work that happens to say something true about your life right now.

Its not about ignoring the cultural importance of the works. We’re just giving art the space to do what it was always meant to do.

Over time, we’ve developed a set of habits around seeing. Like an informal rulebook that tells us when and where our attention is required. Museums, galleries, white walls, careful lighting: these are the chosen places where looking becomes a more conscious act. Outside of them, perception narrows. We filter, we pass by.

This is the unspoken deal we’ve made with art: we’ll give it our attention, but only under certain conditions. Only when it announces itself properly.

What this newsletter hopes to do is renegotiate that deal. Of course, I’ll still point you toward exhibitions worth your time. I’ll tell you what’s quietly extraordinary in a back room of a gallery you’ve probably drove past . But just as important is another question. One that doesn’t depend on a ticket or an opening night: what is art doing for us, really? And how might it change the texture of an ordinary day?

The philosopher Alain de Botton says that art’s primary function isn’t just to please the eye, but to restore it. In other words to sharpen a dulled sensitivity, to help us notice again what we’ve stopped seeing. In that sense, the artist isn’t inventing new worlds so much as recovering this one, by stripping away the film of familiarity that often dulls everything.

It’s about the unnoticed details and beauty already threaded into your day and the slow art of learning how to see them again.
